French authorities recently threatened Google with financial penalties unless it applied Europe’s right to be forgotten data protection policies to all of its users worldwide. By taking this step, France is attempting to enforce its domestic policies on the international community. Rather than attempting to export its values to other countries that do not share them, France should adopt a framework for policy making that balances its own national sovereignty with respect for the global nature of the internet.
