As requested by the European Council in
March 2014
, the Commission has published a road map on future steps to be taken in the area of industrial policy.
With this document – which came in the form of a
letter
and an
annex
addressed to the ministers of the member states in charge of the matter – Elzbieta Bienkowska breaks with the approach taken by her predecessor, Antonio Tajani, in his February 2014
communication
'For a European industrial renaissance'.…
New platform
A new platform – Industrial Innovation for Competitiveness (or i24c) – was launched on 23 June in order to “develop a forward-looking industrial policy for Europe”. It is led by politicians, industrialists and academics, such as former Research Commissioner Máire Geoghegan-Quinn and former World Trade Organisation Director-General Pascal Lamy. The platform wants the EU to focus on innovation to strengthen its industry, but reckons “there currently is a vacuum of thought leadership at the heart of European industrial policy on how such an innovation-based transition can be supported”.
