With seemingly increased attention given to the role carbon capture and storage (CCS) can play in combatting climate change, key messages on CCS development will be included in an upcoming European Commission communication regarding its Strategic Energy Technology (SET) plan, foreseen for September.
“From a technology and innovation point of view, CCS can be profiled highly in discussions,” said Paula Abreu Marques, head of unit renewables and CCS policy at DG Energy, who spoke at a seminar on CCS in…
European North Sea Energy Alliance (ENSEA)
Supported by the Commission’s Seventh Framework Programme, ENSEA was initiated in 2012. It is a consortium of energy-intensive “clusters” from Norway, Germany, the Netherlands and Scotland. Its aim is to develop a network, which fosters the acquisition of knowledge of energy and aligns research programmes through better coordination to deal with energy transition challenges in the area, such as the foreseen decline in fossil fuel exploration. “We have the old infrastructure for oil and gas, whose decommissioning could be very expensive. Using this for CCS could help moderate the costs,” said Faaij.
